Technical Writer for Data

Reporting to: Head of Business Development

Do you want to shape the future of data science education in Scotland? Are you an experienced data analyst or data scientist with a background in R who is passionate about making data skills accessible to all?

CodeClan is an award winning digital skills academy delivering cutting-edge technology training to a wide range of individuals and organisations across Scotland.

With an established immersive Professional Software Development course, we are now developing with an immersive Data Analysis for Business Course. We are looking for two course content writers, available immediately, who are able to summarise complex ideas in clear and compelling ways.

The roles are fixed term of up to 2 months and have the potential to develop into a course tutoring roles for the right individuals. The roles can be remote-based as long as the individuals are able to travel to Edinburgh for regular face-to-face progress meetings


The purpose of the roles is to develop the detailed content, exercises and example datasets for the new Data Analysis for Business course.

The roles will involve:

  • Developing lesson plans to cover agreed learning objectives

  • Writing the lesson content

  • Identifying examples and exercises that demonstrate the learning objectives

  • Defining homework and lab-based exercises that reinforce the learning objectives

  • Creating example outputs and datasets to support all the required content


The roles are very flexible and would suit a wide range of individuals at many levels of experience. It could potentially suit a secondment from an existing role, or those with relevant experience looking to get back into work. It could be carried out flexibly, part-time, or with a level of remote-working. Whatever your situation, get in touch to discuss with us.


  • As a minimum, we are looking for candidates who:

  • Have industry experience across machine learning, data visualisation, data modelling and architecture

  • Familiar with the R programming language, particularly the Tidyverse packages

  • Able to write clear prose and clean code

  • Has a passion for closing the data skills gap

  • Available immediately


In addition, the candidates will have :

  • Extensive experience with the R programming language including creating packages

  • Previous tutoring or coaching experience in data analytics

  • Examples of written materials including blogs or training courses

  • Course designer - liaise with the course designer to understand the required

  • Instructor team - to understand the CodeClan approach and ways of working
