Edinburgh
Greentech Futures

Learning and growing tech solutions for climate problems in Edinburgh.

What is Edinburgh Greentech Futures?

Edinburgh Greentech Futures is a fully-funded, 10-week learning programme designed to give people the skills, knowledge and support they need to explore tech solutions to climate-related issues.

Alongside the learning sessions, we will be holding creative sessions where we will come together to investigate how to solve Edinburgh’s green problems.

Edinburgh Greentech Futures Community

Running in parallel with the learning programme, the Edinburgh Greentech Futures Community is designed for those eager to be part of a growing green technology movement and looking to connect with like-minded individuals. The community is an excellent fit for those who may not be able to commit to the full learning programme, or are primarily interested in attending GreenTech Meetups, information sharing and networking.

Who is Edinburgh Greentech Futures for?

Do you have an interest in using technology to help solve climate issues in Edinburgh and beyond?

Do you have a climate related issue that could be solved using technology, or want to figure out if technology could help?

Do you have an early stage startup in greentech or climate tech and want to grow?

Do you have an idea that could help Edinburgh be more green?

If any of the above apply to you, and if you are over 18 and have an Edinburgh postcode, then Edinburgh Greentech Futures is the programme for you!

You don’t necessarily have to have any background in tech, software or startups. All we ask is that you have a keenness to solve problems and want to make connections with other people passionate about the climate.

This programme is also suitable for very early-stage startups who are looking to improve their green credentials, or who have started working on ideas to solve green issues and want to connect with other like-minded people.

We are particularly interested in supporting applications from:

• School leavers

• Career developers and changers

• Fledgling startup founders and employees

• Graduates and college/university students

• Sustainability champions

• People passionate about sustainable development

Whether you have a startup, an idea, or just an interest in greentech, join the Edinburgh Greentech Futures community and work on your greentech ideas in a supportive and creative environment.

What, where and when?

All sessions will be delivered in person at the CodeBase building on Castle Terrace in the centre of Edinburgh. We will also be delivering the learning sessions in a hybrid format, so if you can’t join us in person, you can join us online.

Learning Time

During the learning sessions, expect to hear from expert speakers from both the greentech and the startup worlds and find out about what it takes to make a green startup.

Creative Time

During the creative sessions, we will be working in groups to find creative solutions to Edinburgh’s climate-related problems. Some sessions will look at how to reduce carbon in our transport systems, some will cover how to tackle flooding, and we will also explore how to help native and migrant wildlife be more in sync with our seasons. This is a time to come together, and really think outside the box to come up with new and exciting greentech ideas.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We define greentech as technology developed to support sustainability, conservation of the environment, carbon reduction, adaptation, renewable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities and responsible production and consumption.

    We are very open about the definition so if you think this is for you, it probably is!

  • Greentech is a general term used to describe the use of technology and/or science to create products and services that are environmentally friendly. They could be something that helps reduce energy consumption, measure carbon footprints, improve green energy production or negate negative effects of consumerism on the environment. The goal is to protect the environment, repair damage, and preserve natural resources.

    Here are some examples of digital greentech products:

    Agrecalc: the farm carbon calculator;
    Topolytics: making the world’s waste visible;
    Snowball: automatically find the most sustainable options when you shop online.

  • That’s ok! The learning is designed for developing digital software products, but it can be applied to physical products as well.

  • That’s great! Come along, meet up with peers and learn how to be more green, or apply startup thinking to your current business!
