Code of Conduct

As part of our mission as ecosystem builders, we want to build an inclusive, supportive and safe space for people to be a part of. To ensure everyone who takes part in all our activities across all our channels behaves in a way conducive to building a safe environment which fosters diversity, equity and inclusion and allows people to build, grow and scale their startups comfortably, we require all our participants to agree to our code of conduct as outlined below.

In general, we encourage the following behaviours: treating others with respect, keeping an open mind to new ideas and opinions and listening to different points of view, and taking a clear stand against offensive behaviour, and inappropriate messages, comments and jokes.

CodeBase is committed to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone. We do not tolerate harassment of users in any form. Anyone who violates this code of conduct may be removed from these activities and channels at the discretion of the CodeBase team. Some CodeBase activities may have additional rules in place, which will be made clearly available to users in the event or channel description.

Harassment includes, but is not limited to:

  • Offensive comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, mental illness, neuro(a)typicality, physical appearance, body size, age, race, or religion or belief.

  • Unwelcome comments regarding a person’s lifestyle choices and practices, including those related to food, health, marriage, parenting, drugs, and employment.

  • Deliberate misgendering or use of ‘dead’ or rejected names and deliberate “outing” of any aspect of a person’s identity without their consent except as necessary to protect vulnerable people from intentional abuse

  • Sexual harassment including but not limited to: unwelcome actions, jokes or other verbal comments of a sexual nature, physical contact and simulated physical contact without consent

  • Threats of violence or incitement of violence towards any individual or group, including encouraging a person to commit suicide or to engage in self-harm.

  • Deliberate intimidation, stalking or following.

  • Harassing photography or recording, including logging online activity for harassment purposes or publication of non-harassing private communication.

Reporting harassment

If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please email us at complaints@thisiscodebase.com. Emails to this address will be received by CodeBase’s CEO, SVP of Ecosystems, VP of Operations, VP of Partnerships, and Head of Operations. If your complaint involves any of these people then you can contact your local Head of Regional Engagement to make your complaint. After receiving the complaint, somebody will be in touch to discuss further and take a record of your account. We will respond as promptly as we can. If other parties need to become involved in the process as your complaint progresses, we'll work with you to ensure that you're comfortable and that we have your consent to share information.

We will respect confidentiality requests for the purpose of protecting victims of abuse. At our discretion, we may publicly name a person about whom we’ve received harassment complaints, or privately warn third parties about them, if we believe that doing so will increase the safety of CodeBase tenants or the general public. We will not name harassment victims without their affirmative consent.

Consequences

Participants asked to stop any harassing behaviour are expected to comply immediately.

If a participant engages in harassing behaviour, the CodeBase team may take any action they deem appropriate, up to and including expulsion from all CodeBase community events and channels, and identification of the participant as a harasser to other CodeBase tenants or the general public.

This anti-harassment policy is based on the example policy from the Geek Feminism wiki, created by the Geek Feminism community.
